General Questions

Can I record video or audio from Real Player?

Yes. Use RM Recorder to record Real streams. WM Recorder records Windows Media and almost every other kind of stream except for Real Media.

Can I record pay-per-view movies or videos?

No. Pay-per-view content uses Digital Rights Management (DRM), and cannot be recorded.

Can I make MP3 files from my recordings?

WM Recorder saves .wma files only.

If you're looking for a great conversion tool, we highly recommend Replay Converter.

Can I burn my recordings to a CD or DVD?

WM Recorder currently makes only .WMA (audio) and .WMV (video) files. You can copy these files to a data CD, and watch or listen to them as long as your CD Player supports these formats.

To burn audio CDs, you'll need to convert them to WAV files first. Litex Audio Conversion Wizard is a good product which can do this.

Another solution is to use Replay Radio or Radio Wizard to make recordings. Both will make WAV files, and Replay Radio will burn to a CD automatically.

As far as making DVDs goes, this is something we're working on.

How do I record password-protected sites with WM VCR?

WM Recorder and RM Recorder allow you to add a login/password to the end of a URL. Here's how to do it with WM Recorder:

  1. Click URLs on the main screen to open the Saved URLs list.
  2. Right click on the URL of the show and select Change URL Password.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Using Notepad open the file urls.asx, located in the program files folder with WMR.exe.
  5. Copy the URL which should have the password attached (password is encrypted).
  6. Open WM VCR and paste the URL.

Can I record streamed MP3 or AVI files?

Yes. Be sure to turn on the Enable Internet Explorer option in the Settings dialog. For advanced users: You can also record using the saved URL in URL mode.

Can I record ASF and MP3 Playlists (countdowns)?

Yes. Open WM Recorder, click Record and then start playing the countdown. All clips will be recorded in sequence.

How does the Compress Time feature work?

Example 1: You’re playing a long video and want to record just portions of it. For example, let's say you stop the video after the first 10 minutes and then advance the seek bar to the next point at 25 minutes. When the file is played back Windows Media will see a time gap of 15 minutes and it will freeze the picture and sound during all this time. Compressing the time will eliminate this gap.

Example 2: You’re recording a stream that has multiple interruptions (gaps) where no data is coming (do not confuse this with buffering time). The compress time will eliminate the wasted time and cut off the gaps.

What does the Seekable option do?

The Seekable option enables the seek bar for a recorded file so you can move forward or backward through the file. However, there are instances when a file cannot be made seekable during recording even if this option is enabled. In this case, you should use the Reprocess option with the Seekable flag enabled.

The opposite is when you record a file that was seekable but you want to make it non-seekable. This may force your audience to see the entire clip. In this case, you can Reprocess the file with the seekable flag off.

What happens if the site I'm trying to record from is busy?

If this happens, WM Recorder will try to reconnect at 10 second intervals.

How do I record just a portion of the broadcast in WM Recorder?

To start recording from a time other than the start:

  1. Click URL's on the main screen to open the Saved URL's.
  2. Right click the URL and select Restart Recording.
  3. Enter the time you want to start recording (hours, minutes, seconds) and click OK.

Troubleshooting

I'm playing a Windows Media stream, but it's not recording. Why?

If you started WM Recorder with your browser or Windows Media Player already open, you may not be able to get a recording. WM Recorder works by intercepting streaming data from the Internet, and needs to be run BEFORE Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player are opened. Here's what to do in this case:

  1. Close all Internet Explorer windows.
  2. Close Windows Media Player.
  3. Close WM Recorder.
  4. Reopen WM Recorder.

Your recordings should now operate flawlessly.

The other possible reason recordings don't occur: This file may be already cached in your PC. Try deleting all your Temporary Internet Files, and then rerecording. Here's how to do this:

  1. In Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Try recording again.

I'm using a proxy server and sometimes I cannot record. Why?

Windows Media Player does not support proxy connections for TCP (mms://) streams. For this reason Windows Media Player and WM Recorder will try to find the HTTP (http://) version of the file in the server. If this version is found then you can play and record the file.

Why do I see RECORD WAITING… ?

This message appears in three cases.

  • There is no Windows Media Stream detected.
  • Or, the recording was finished before the clip ended.
  • Or, because a clip or a portion of a clip was already recorded during the same recording session. For example, you may be recording a seekable clip and at one point in time you decide to pause and then go back. When you restart the clip WM Recorder will not record until the point where you paused is reached.

How can I resume a dropped connection?

Resuming a dropped connection only makes sense for seekable streams. You can use either Browse Mode or the URL Mode to resume.

In Browse Mode, start the clip using Windows Media Player and selecting Open URL, next, move the seek bar to the resuming point. Pause Windows Media Player, then click Record in WM Recorder, and then restart Windows Media Player. When you finish recording use the Reprocess / Merge option in WM Recorder to join the two files.

In URL Mode, click Settings, Resume, select the URL and specify the resume time. When you finish recording join the two files using the Merge option.

I can't play recorded files from within WM Recorder.

Windows Media Player is probably not set up to play ASF files. Do this:

  1. Open Windows Media Player, and choose Tools, Options from the menu.
  2. Click the File Types tab.
  3. Make sure ASF is checked.

This will ensure that Windows Media Player will play ASF files by default, and will also ensure that files will play from within WM Recorder.

I am trying to record a long stream, but the recorded file is much shorter. How do I record the entire stream?

This problem usually occurs for the following reasons:

  1. The broadcasting site shuts down the connection.
  2. The broadcast contains multiple consecutive streams that have the same URL (address) and / or same stream ID's.

While case 1 may be handled by reconnecting (WM Recorder implements this feature) case 2 is not currently implemented in all recording modes but only in the PRO (Proxy) mode.

Please select the PRO (Browse Proxy) recording mode. To do this click MODE and select Proxy Mode (uncheck Enable Internet Explorer). When you restart WM Recorder do the following:

  3. Click RECORD.
  4. Click the URL's button to open the URL list and right click on your saved URL. If the URL was not saved, copy the URL, then click Paste / OK to enter the URL in the list.
  5. Right click on the URL and select Open URL with WMP.

I'm having trouble recording videos from AOL.

AOL plays videos using the AOL Player or Real Player. AOL Player streams cannot be recorded but Real Player can (using RM Recorder). This is possible only on Broadband connections (Cable, DSL).

My browser is unable to connect to the Internet after using WM Recorder.

This problem may occur when the recording mode is PRO (Proxy) and the option "Enable Internet Explorer" is checked in the MODE settings. In this case WMR changes the browser connection settings such that the entire browser data goes through WMR before being delivered to the browser. When WMR is closed the initial browser settings are restored.

If this is not the case do the following.

1. Click MODE and uncheck the button "Enable Internet Explorer". WMR will close.

2. Start the browser and click Tools / Internet Options / Connection LAN Settings. Delete all text that may be shown in the Address / Port boxes and uncheck the button "Use a proxy server...". Close the browser and restart to see if the problem went away.

3. Open the folder where WMR.exe resides and delete the file SavedWmrReg.txt. Then restart WM Recorder.

Note: If the recording mode is ADA or URL the browser settings are not changed.
